Ovako\u2019s Imatra mill develops and manufactures technically advanced steel for demanding applications in the automotive and mechanical engineering industries, among others. The different types of steels are used in a wide range of products, such as power transmission equipment and transformers, shafts, gears, crankshafts, springs, bearings, screws and mining equipment. <\/p>\n
\u2013 Demanding applications require both high performance and reliable and consistent quality from materials \u2013 combining these is Ovako\u2019s core competence, says Manager of Technical Customer Service Johanna Haapasalmi.<\/strong><\/p>\n Ovako\u2019s operations are strongly based on the circular economy and resource efficiency. The main raw material used is recycled scrap, which is melted down using fossil-free electricity. As a result, Ovako\u2019s steel products have one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world. The ecobalance of the production process is also exemplary.<\/p>\n \u2013 The Imatra mill produces only about five kilograms of waste per tonne of steel produced that cannot be recycled. Most of the materials are recycled back into production, says Haapasalmi. <\/p>\n The Imatra mill produces around 250 different types of steel. Imatra\u2019s best-known product is M-Steel\u00ae, which saves customers machining costs and improves the productivity of machining processes.
